Failed It! A Workshop with Odette England, 2/13 and 2/20

This workshop offers an exciting investigation into failure in photography. We will discover and debate the complexities, challenges, and benefits of failure. We will look at and learn from flaws, imperfections, rejects,and errors. We will encourage thinking about failure in positive, unexpected, inspirational, and low-fi ways. We will learn about artists who are motivated by errors, uncommon methods, and breaking rules. The course includes presentations, discussions, in-class activities and independent work. There will be an emphasis on using and subverting everyday tools and materials.

Course Goals• Build knowledge and understanding about failure, flaws, imperfections, rejects, and errors related to photography and the processes involved• Involve you in thinking about and using different forms of ‘failure’ in your work, in positive, unexpected,inspirational ways•

Learn about photographers who are motivated by errors, radical rethinking of processes, amateur methods, or rule-breaking• Research and develop your own approaches to using and/or exploiting failure.

About Odette England:

Odette England uses photography, performance, writing, and the archive to explore themes of autobiography, land, gender, and ritual.

England is the 2020/2021 Artist-in-Residence at Amherst College in Massachusetts. She is also a resident artist of the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Studio Program in New York.

Her work has shown in more than 100 solo, two-person, and group exhibitions worldwide. Notable venues include the George Eastman Museum, Museum of Contemporary Photography Chicago, New Mexico Museum of Art, Fort Wayne Museum of Art, RISD Museum, Center for Photography at Woodstock, Colorado Photographic Arts Center, Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, MacDonald Stewart Art Center Ontario, Perth Center for Photography in Australia, State Library of South Australia, HOST Gallery London, and the Durham Art Museum & Gallery in England.

England was recently named a 2021 Light Work Artist in Residence and a recipient of the 2021 Silver Eye Center for Photography Fellowship.
