JURORS STATEMENT

A portrait is a visual representation that portrays the likeness of a person, place, animal, or object. Portraiture has a long history in many mediums of art, not only photography. Artists are often drawn to a photographic portrait’s ability to capture a person’s character in a moment either candidly or with careful planning. Artist

Marsha Guggenheim captured beautiful patterned light shining while her subject is lost in thought. Her subject doesn’t feel posed or staged; it is a true expression of the subject at that moment. While other photographers design a portrait to tell a story, such as JRicardo Rodrigues’ dramatic light in XVIII Century

Project No. 2. Looking into each of these portraits creates a feeling of being with the subject, of experiencing that person’s life and feelings, and imagining their story. Join us in exploring this spectacular expression of portraits, in the Main Gallery until February 20, 2016. Always Free, public welcome. -Martha Schneider
