Alayna N. Pernell: A Peek Behind The Curtain Artist Talk Hosted by Aline Smithson.

Alayna N. Pernell (b. 1996). is a visual artist, writer, and educator from a small town called Heflin, Alabama. She is a graduate of The University of Alabama, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art with a concentration in Photography and a minor in African American Studies. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Currently, she is an Associate Lecturer of Photography & Imaging at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

In my artistic practice, I examine the harsh realities and complexities experienced by Black American women. Visually, I attempt to create space for healthy dialogue to occur. I hold firm to the idea that in order to promote understanding, love, and empathy between each other, it is vital to have difficult conversations. -Alayna N. Pernell

Aline Smithson is the founder and chief editor of LENSCRATCH, a photography journal that celebrates a different contemporary photographer each day.

Aline Smithson is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and editor based in Los Angeles, California. Her practice examines the archetypal foundations of the creative impulse, and she uses humor and pathos to explore the performative potential of photography. She received a BA in art from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
