Polemic (assuming you are curious) is derived from the Greek polemikos, meaning “of war.” The title of PD Rearick’s Polemic Exercise suggests an underlying theme of argument or controversy. Rearick’s doctrine, however, is stripped of these implied hostilities and supports acts of levity instead.

He writes:

As an undersized man in the oversized Detroit arena, it’s more important to dance with rather than be overwhelmed by the setting. In this self-portrait series, by playing in the cliché of abandoned spaces, not into it, my humorous act restores a site’s utility, and draws attention to the location with a deadpan dignity.
