Darkroom I (Black and White Printing)
Course Description:
Working in the Darkroom has been a passion for photographers over the years. Learning how to use the equipment and the techniques in the Darkroom properly will increase the work produced.
In this session you will be introduced to the darkroom, its common components: The enlarger and its parts, timer workings, safety light use, general chemistry, and darkroom courtesy & safety.
This class will provide the participants a chance to evaluate negatives for enlargement using a light box and lupe. We will make Contact sheets and do test stripping, understand aperture/ time controls for the effects they produce, employ varieties of photo papers for specific images, tonalities, surfaces, use filtration for increased contrast ranges, learn burn and dodge techniques for technical/individual expression, experiment with varieties of print size for maximum clarity and expression, critique prints
The aim of this workshop is to create several prints of good quality.

Materials List: You need to bring 35mm or 120mm black and white negatives.

Valerie Burke
Valerie Burke was an adjunct professor in the Photography Department at Columbia College, Chicago for sixteen years. Valerie's photographs are held in the collection of the California Museum of Photography, the Graham Nash Collection of Photography, the National Museum for Women in the Arts, and the Pinhole Resource Center. Her photography has been exhibited at the Illinois State Museum. The Lofoten International Art Center, Svolvaer, Norway; The Chicago Cultural Center; Klein Art Works, Museum of Contemporary Photography, among others.
