Child of the Railways

Photographer Bill Jackson is taken by the impermanence that photography emphasizes, readily acknowledging that what is captured on film now will not exist precisely in five or ten years. Accordingly, he is drawn to the preservation of fleeting visual intersections. Jackson’s Child of the Railways was also recently selected for the Taylor Wessing Award exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Where there are schools, there are school pictures. With the scrubbed faces and clean shirts comes a heroic effort to assemble youth into an unnatural state of placidity. Photographer L.A. Moore speaks to this nearly universal experience of ordered chaos in his image Tokyo School Girls.
