Ana De Orbegoso celebrates modern Peruvian culture by deconstructing and reconfiguring colonial paintings in her series Urban Virgins.

Orbegoso writes:

The Urban Virgins are colonial paintings, revised and reinvented to reflect contemporary realities and ideals. For this project, images of historical religious Peruvian paintings have been altered using modern photographic techniques. Many of the paintings’ characters, backgrounds, and symbols were substituted so as to celebrate the cultural, spiritual and physical diversity of present-day Peru.

Shea Naer’s Scrim series translates the like-monikered theatrical trick using the digital tools of opacity and translucence. The resulting images depict subjects separated from a world that continues to move regardless of their distinct pause. Naer was recently featured in the Center’s Blue exhibition.
