Artist Statement
Shibuya is the commercial center of Tokyo. Here you find a multitude of clothing stores, shopping malls, restaurants, clubs and love hotels. It’s one of the most famous spots in the whole of Japan for young people to meet.
The Shibuya Series has been shot at the most famous crossing in Japan. In every traffic light sequence, 4,000 people pass through on an average. In the evening rush hour this can reach up to 15,000 people. These masses, completely disciplined but apparently without any particular pattern, buzz around all over the place, causing panic and fascination at the same time. By freezing the moment, the individual’s anonymity is erased. This very graphic way of constructing the image and the complete lack of background information give the viewer deep insight into the single individual’s personality.
